Black Mass ***

IMDB Synopsis:  true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.

“Black Mass” marks a bit of a comeback for Johnny Depp. It is awesome to see him sink his teeth in to a real meaty character and turn out one of those unique performances that only he is capable of. I don’t know if this will be the financial comeback that he needs but it certainly is the creative one.

The film is based on the true story of Whitey Bugler, one of the most infamous crime lords in South Boston. Depp plays Bulger as man who seems drunk with the power he was given not only on the streets but by the authorities who supported him instead of bringing him down.

The film is directed Scott Cooper who was behind the great “Crazy Heart”. Here he directs a fairly good movie. I did find that I wanted it to get more in depth. Most of the plot basically touches on the greatest hits of this case. I think there is about an hour of more story that could of been added here to make this a truly great film.
