IMDB Synopsis: Four men set out in the Wild West to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers.
“Bone Tomahawk” is a movie that I am truly mixed on. On the one hand I liked the quietly production and low key performances. I am also a sucker for a good western. On the other hand I’m not sure I reacted well to the level of violence present in film’s final act. There are some death scenes here that unnerved me in ways I didn’t think a film could. The fact that I’m still thinking about it days later is a credit to the production but I don’t think I will ever watch this film again.
The writer and director is Craig Zahler. I am not fully familiar with his work. Seems he has mostly done production work until he wrote and directed this film. His talent behind the camera is undeniable. He makes the west look cold and unforgiving in ways that I have not seen in a movie for some time. I also liked his minimalist approach using almost no score and relying mostly on the drama from the cast. I am also a fan of anywho who casts Kurt Russell in an action role.
