Filth ***

Anyone want to see James Macavoy unhinged? The results are a nice little black comedy that throws in a bit of drama and sentiment for good measure. Macavoy plays a particularly grotesque Scottish police man who would prefer to debase himself with drugs and sex as opposed to performing his job well. He does not go Harvey Keitel or Nicolas Cage vile but he tries to.

“Filth” surprised me with it’s intelligent screenplay, considering the subject matter. The characters have a surprising amount of depth to them. The director Jon Baird gives the actors good screen time to really dive in to their roles.
