“The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” is a let down for me considering the talent involved. To think that the last time Jim Carrey and Steve Carell teamed up we got the hilarious “Bruce Almighty”. Now, ten years later, their second collaboration is no where near as funny which is a shame considering the subject matter.
Carell and Carrey play competing magicians. Carell plays a more classical magician, who prides himself in traditional illusions. But after years of performing the same act in Vegas, he becomes disillusioned and almost corrupt. Even his loyal parter, played by Steve Buscemi quits their act. It would seem that a new illusionist is on the scene and gaining tons of attention. This is Jim Carrey, who prefers to stun his audience with shocking stunts involving a lot of self mutilation. At one point he simply holds his urine for days and days, resulting the movies funniest line.
Now I can’t really put my finger on what went wrong here because I just didn’t find the material all that funny or even dramatic. Everybody but Carrey seems to be phoning in their performances. The script is quite weak when it should be going for broke. The director, Don Scardino and the writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are veterans of some great television shows such as “30 Rock”, and “Freaks And Geeks”, so I expected a lot from this movie. Instead it is a pretty forgettable experience.
