“Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters” is one of those movies you regret starting to watch almost instantly. I could tell about half an hour in that this movie had no interest in developing great characters, atmosphere or an absorbing story. This is basically 90 minutes of boring action action and gore. There is a series of gruesome showdowns with witches strung together by scenes of agonizingly stupid dialogue and bland performances.
Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as Hansel and Gretel. As kids they were lured in to a candy house by a witch. They managed to turn the tables and stuff the witch in to her own oven. Since then they have devoted their lives to hunting witches and killing them. Eventually they come up against a truly nasty witch played by Famke Janssen.
Amazingly this movie was produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Was it intended to be a dark comedy? I could not tell because the tone of the film shifts from scene to scene. The director, Tommy Wirkola, really has no idea what kind of film he wants to make.
This new fad of making classic fairy tales in to live action films has produced some decent flicks so far but like any popular genre there is bound to be a few duds.
