“The Expendables 2” is the sequel to the first film that found some surprising box office success. I thought the first movie was pretty good but could have been better. The sequel is definitely an improvement but I still imagine this epic cast being destined for bigger and better movies.
All of the original cast return for the sequel. That includes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and Dolph Lundgren. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis had a single scene in the original but this time have larger roles as well. The new additions are Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth and Jean-Claude Van Damme are the new comers. I am already dreaming of who could join up for the third installment should there be one. Maybe Wesley Snipes perhaps?
The plot involves the crew on the hunt for the bad guys who murdered one of their own. There is also the theft of some plutonium thrown in for good measure.
Now since there isn’t much story to tell I will get down to the action. The first film was directed by Stallone and I did find his visual style to be a little too boring at times. Simon West takes the reigns and adds a lot more visual flair. Action sequences seem to have bigger scope and visual flair. West is the director of such movies as “Con Air” and “The General’s Daughter”. He knows how action should look.
My only issue is that the story is so simple minded. I love seeing all these action icons on screen together but I wish they all had more to do then just blow people away.
