“The Watch” is not a great movie but it is no where near as bad as I thought it would be. Talk about an awful marketing campaign. The previews were not very funny and they changed the story from trailer to trailer. It is almost like they didn’t know how to market this thing. They even changed the title after the Trayvon Martin shooting, which was ridiculous in my opinion. In the end we get a few laughs but this is totally a missed opportunity.
Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade play a group of suburbanites who form a neighborhood watch. The setup alone should be enough for a raucous comedy but some how the dialogue and gags all fall flat on their face.
Eventually these guys find real trouble when it turns out that their small town is being setup for an alien invasion. There are some funny moments involving the alien hive being created under a Costco. “They really do have everything” one character suggests.
The film was directed by Akiva Schaffer and written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Perhaps these guys are running out of ideas collaborating together and need to try working independently for a while. Or maybe this is one of those movies that looked better on paper but just never came together in a cohesive way.
