“Battleship” is the worst movie of 2012 so far. I can’t even start to grasp the talent behind and in front of the camera. This isn’t even one of those movies where I can think of how it could have been better because it never should have been made. It was a bad idea from start to finish and the result is a 250 million dollar piece of crap.
Peter Berg the director of such films as “The Rundown”, “Friday Night Lights” and “The Kingdom”, is the man at the helm here. Why did he do this movie? Was it part of a deal to get some passion project of his made? I am not putting the blame on him because his direction is not the problem. I’m just wondering how he got roped in to this.
The cast is pretty good as well. I can see how Rhianna and Brooklyn Decker joined with this but i’m uncertain how Liam Neeson and Taylor Kitsch got caught up in this.
The plot involves giant transformer like aliens that invade the earth. They face off over the ocean against the Navy. Yes we get scenes where the military strategize as if they are playing the game Battleship. Theres screens that are meant to replicate the actual game board that they use to battle the alien ships. The funny things is that I had that game as a kid and I do not remember there being aliens.
As I watched these moments unfold I couldn’t do anything but stare in amazement at the military using such tactics. Combine that with the usual frantic action scenes with uninspired alien ships that look like metallic junk yards and you get the idea of how stupid this movie is.
