“The Five Year Engagement” is about a couple that gets engaged for five years and all the family and social hijinks that go with it. Being engaged for five years is a long time. It also makes for a long movie if the two people engaged are not that likable.
Jason Segel and Emily Blunt play the couple that get engaged. The director is Nicholas Stoller who made “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him To The Greek”. Those were great comedies but here somewhere the story just gets lost. I just didn’t find much of this very funny or convincing.
Blunt and Segel do what they can with their roles but I didn’t much care for their characters that much.
Wedding themed comedies are going to become a dime a dozen thanks to the success of last year’s “Bridesmaids”. I just hope that they can keep things fresh and funny.
