Game Change ***

“Game Change” is a new HBO movie about the 2008 Presidential Election. The focus is the John McCain campaign and their game changing move of selecting Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska, as a running mate.

The film stars Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin and Ed Harris as John McCain. Their performances are as authentic as they can be. They recreate real life interviews and speeches, but the real story is the behind the scenes events.

Now who knows how much of this is real and how much is fiction but it all feels fairly true to life. Director Jay Roach and writer Danny Strong do a good job of never exaggerating or attempting to paint these characters in certain lights. We see them as they are. Although I don’t imagine McCain drops as many f-bombs in real life as he does in this film.

One response to “Game Change ***

  1. McCain in real life swears like the old military dog he is, and he also is famous for losing his temper. But you need the McCain of the movie to contrast calmness and experience against the Palin of the movie, a neophyte overwhelmed by the realities of national campaigning. It’s called dramatic license. I thought the film was great, and after all, movies based on real events are supposed to portray reality with the boring parts left out. True is a better word to use than real. I’m glad to see you said it that way.
