“Margin Call” depicts an investment firm on the eve of the 2008 economic meltdown. We meet a group of traders working at this unnamed firm, who catch wind of what’s happening, and take despicable steps to try and cushion the fall for themselves.
The movie has a pretty strong cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Stanley Tucci, and Demi Moore. Director J.C. Chandor is good at giving everyone lots of screen time in an effort to portray everyone’s motivations and partial back stories.
Chandor also wrote the screenplay, which he has tailored in such a way that we can sort of understand what’s happening without having to be financial experts. That he achieves this without dumbing down the dialogue is pretty exceptional.
