“Contagion” made me not want to touch anybody. It is a pretty gripping thriller about an unknown virus that spreads throughout the world, seemingly by touch. This causes the usual array of scientists and government authorities to scramble to find a cure and avoid mass panic.
What’s interesting about this movie though is that mass panic happens, and leads to society collapsing. People begin to turn on each other in a way that seems frighteningly real.
The cast is probably the best line up of the year. I think only a director like Steven Soderbergh could get Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, John Hawkes and Marion Cotilliard.
Soderbergh is so good at making character thrillers about real people in real time. Here he raises the stakes on a global scale and delivers a pulse pounding thriller that is grounded in reality. We can all remember some sort of possible epidemic in our pasts. Now imagine it got past the warning stage and began to infect the world. This is where “Contagion” takes us.
