The Help **

I didn’t catch up to “The Help” until it hit the home market. It was a massive success at the box office. Now that I have seen it I can see why. It is a real crowd pleaser. This is a heartwarming tale about how two white women overcome some serious racism in the deep south during the 1960s.

How is it that Emma Stone and Allison Janney are the main characters in this film? Their performances are good but I really think that this story should be told from the point of view of Viola Davis’ character. Her performance is powerful and deserving of her inevitable Oscar nomination. But she is given a supporting role in a movie that plays it way too safe.

What would a movie look like in the hands of a fearless director like Spike Lee or Lee Daniels? We will never know.  Here we get a fairly light story from what could have been quite a searing examination of life during that time.
