“Couples Retreat” is taking a real beating from the critics and I am not really sure why. Sure it is contrived and predictable, but in a sitcom sort of way, its pretty funny. The dialogue and situations are hilarious, Vince Vaughn is doing what he does, and I had a good time. What more could I ask for? Sure it has way more potential then is on screen but I still found it to have a lot of laughs.
There is a solid cast here including Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell, Faizon Love, Jean Reno, and other familiar faces who all bring something entertaining to the screen. The plot involves four couples who go on a group vacation to a paradise resort that specializes in couples therapy. What transpires would be at home in a television sitcom, but I found it funny anyway.
Whether its an intrusive yoga instructor, pushy therapists, or naked skill building, the movie never falls short of laughs. For a friday night date movie, I think it works. Sure there could have been a better story, but it is what it is.
