“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is the best from the Appatow gang thus far.  Don’t get me wrong I loved “The 40 Year Old Virgin”, “Superbad”, and “Knocked Up”, but this film connected with me just a little more.  Maybe it was because Jason Segel was so hapless yet likeable.  Maybe because we have all felt his pain at one point in time.  My head wants to say that it was the funny yet true dialogue, the funny and endearing performances, or the gorgeous scenery of Hawaii.  I can’t put my finger on it exactly.

Jason Segal stars as Peter, who is dumped at the beginning of the movie by Sarah Marshall, played by Kristen Bell.  Sarah is the star of a cheesy, yet popular, CSI style TV show.  After getting dumped, Peter falls in to a pathetic depression that involves eating lots of cereal and listening to Sinead O’Connor.  His friend tells him to take a vacation and thats just what he does.  Off to Hawaii where he just happens to stay in the hotel where his ex is staying.  This is a recipe for disaster.  But he meets, and hits it off with Rachel, played by Mila Kunis, who, as it turns out, is not annoying like she is on “That 70’s Show”.  Here she is fun and loveable, with an edge.

Is this the future of romantic comedies?  Who knows for sure.  All I can say is that I look forward to anything with the Appatow name on it.  Even if it misses, I know they will try and go for broke, and make something honest and funny.  There is nothing more I can ask for.
