You know, before the year 2007, I was not a fan of musicals. But movies like “Hairspray”, “Sweeney Todd” and “Across the Universe” have really opened up the possibilities of this genre to me. This may not be the best of the three, but it is certainly not bad by any means.
The story follows a young man from Liverpool who comes to America in search of his father. He winds up in Greenwich, where he falls for an American girl who has grown up sheltered all her life. Together they experience the turbulent times of the sixties, all the while singing songs from the Beatles anthology.
Julie Taymor, the director of “Frida”, brings a certain visual flair to the whole movie. I have to admit that the middle section kind of lost me in a whirl wind of psychedelic images, but the movie came back around and finished on a high note.
