Along Came Polly ***

“Along Came Polly” is a movie that sort of caught me off guard. I was expecting a more straight forward rom com but was pleasantly surprised to find it was hysterical. If you liked “There’s Something About Mary” or “Meet The Parents” then you should really check this out. It is definitely raunchy humor but it works.

Ben Stiller plays a guy who loses his wife to a Scuba trainer while on their honeymoon. He comes home heartbroken and confused. He is comforted by his best friend growing up played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays a former child actor who is struggling with the fact that he is just not famous anymore. I laughed loudly when he first showed up and bailed on the dance floor at the wedding.

Stiller starts dating Polly, played by Jennifer Aniston, who is the polar opposite of his character. Stiller works at an insurance agency and specializes in assessing risks, which he lives his life by. Polly is care free world traveller who likes to throw caution to the wind. The plot becomes fairly standard from there but it is the characters that hooked me in.

I also laughed throughout this movie rather embarrassingly. I especially appreciated Alec Baldwin as Stiller’s no nonsense boss who seems to have no filter when it comes to speaking his mind. The first thing he says to Stiller after he gets back from his honeymoon is that he knew his wife was a ‘slut’ the first moment he met her. “She is a dime store hooker and will always be one”.

“Along Came Polly” is not exactly an engaging film but it is funny so if you want a good laugh and some entertaining characters then I fully recommend you check it out.
