“Pitch Black” is a movie that I initially did not enjoy seeing in theatres. It was only years later that I grew to appreciate it. Maybe it was because of it’s simplicity or the fact that it is a hard R rated movie and we don’t get a lot of those anymore. Who knows but for whatever reason I actually enjoy the movie quite a bit. The sequel is another story.
The plot involves a space ship that crash lands on a hostile planet. The crew must try to survive. At first it seems like the sun is always up since the planet is surrounded by 3 stars. But wouldn’t you know it, a once in a million years eclipse is coming which will bring darkness. That is when the inhabitants of the planet come from under the ground to feed. The rest of the movie becomes a race for survival.
The cast includes Vin Diesel in one of his most famous roles as the convict Riddick. He has the ability to see in the dark which is mighty convenient. He does most of the battle with the vicious aliens. He also has an attitude. Think of Snake Plissken in space.
There is another sequel coming out later this year which Diesel and director David Twohy have promised will be a return to form for the franchise. I certainly hope it is.
