Kickboxer **1/2

At this point the plot elements in a Van Damme movie are becoming too easy to predict. Here is yet another flick in which a Van Damme character finds himself entering a dangerous boxing match in order to avenge the crippling of his brother.

This is preceded by a grueling montage in which a martial arts master trains him to become an expert fighter. Everything ends in a battle with the main antagonist, who begins by beating him to a pulp just so Van Damme can find the inner will to rise up and beat him back.

The fight sequences are impressive and look vicious as they should but the movie really did not provide any character depth beyond everybody’s generic motivations. I was glad to see Van Damme break away from this genre and move in to different territory for his later years.
