“Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” is a slice of nostalgia for me. Watching it now makes me long for a time when effects were created with practical methods. It is nice to see physical sets, stop motion animation, and a general sense of wonder in a movie.
The plot is basically in the title. A scientist builds a device that can shrink any object and accidentally shrinks his own children. He also shrinks the neighbors kids for good measure. To make matters worse he sweeps them up and puts them in the trash unknowingly. Together the kids, who are now about a centimeter big, must get across their yard and back to the device.
This is no easy task as now bugs like Ants and Bees are the size of a car to them. There is also a lawn mower and a sprinkler to contend with.
“Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” is not a great movie by any means but it is a lot of fun and I fully appreciated the production. This day and age computers would have created the entire illusion.
