How was “Dead Poets Society” nominated for Academy Awards and achieved such a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes? It is not a good movie. In fact I found it highly manipulative and predictable. Also Robin Williams, who was nominated for a lead role, gives a performance that would be more at home in a comedy then a drama about poetry.
I could tell every plot development long before they could happen. There were cliches everywhere. And for a movie that is supposed to be about poetry it doesn’t really seem to love it all that much. The characters recite it from time to time but they don’t really use it to transcend the story.
Peter Weir is one of my favorite directors but he does not hit this one out of the park. He should of taken all the tired drama and replaced it with a story that is just about the poetry.
